How does Emsella Work?

Emsella’s patented technology (HIFEM or High Intensity Focussed Electromagnetic procedure) uses electromagnetic energy to cause thousands of deep pelvic floor contractions, which are held for much longer and at a far higher intensity than can be achieved naturally.

Approx. 11,000 Kegels in 28 minutes

During Treatment

During the treatment, you will sit fully clothed on the Emsella and allow it to work it’s magic – there are no probes, no invasive examinations and no anaesthetics involved.

Remain fully clothed

6 x 28-min sessions over 3 weeks

Non-invasive and zero downtime

Pain Free

The stimulation of the entire pelvic floor area results in the re-education and restoration of neuromuscular control and strengthening of weak pelvic floor muscles. You will feel intense (yet gentle) contractions of your pelvic floor muscles. Most clients describe the sensation as unusual but not painful.

After Treatment

Results are dependent on each person’s circumstances and symptoms.

Some clients experience immediate improvements, others may take a little longer. Clinical studies have shown that results in most clients are maintained for at least 6 months, depending on the initial severity of symptoms.

DID YOU KNOW?

A 2021 study showed that healthcare workers are more at risk of developing urinary incontinence due to the physical nature of their profession. Healthcare workers are just one example. If you are in a profession where one or more of the below apply, you could be at higher risk too:

  • Long hours without easy access to toilets.
  • Physical strain, such as lifting or heavy activity.
  • Stress and pressure from high-demand jobs.
  • Sedentary roles with prolonged sitting.
  • Inability to hydrate properly or take regular breaks.

FAQs

How many people struggle with urinary incontinence?

You are not alone and my aim is to normalise conversation about Urinary incontinence (“UI”). UI is a widespread health concern affecting millions of people worldwide, impacting daily life, self-confidence, and intimate wellness. Across East and West Midlands, there are an average of 8700 searches online for UI related treatments and products per month.

  • Women – 339 million women are affected by UI worldwide, 14.3 million of whom are in the UK. That’s 42% of women in the UK. So if you are a woman, almost every other woman you walk by is affected by UI.
  • Men – there are many studies with varying information. Various data sources suggest that between 114 million and 418 million men worldwide are affected by UI. At a high level, roughly 5-6% of men in the UK experience combined faecal and urinary incontinence – this increases to almost 50% in UK nursing home residents. Overall, this equates to approximately 1.8 million men in the UK struggling with UI.

A number of factors can cause the pelvic floor muscles to weaken, resulting in urinary incontinence (which can often creep up on individuals) and/or decreased intimate satisfaction. Below is a non-exhaustive list:

  • Aging
  • Childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Damaged nerves
  • Hormonal changes
  • Surgical procedures
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Chronic health conditions

The treatment is for both men and women experiencing stress, urge or mixed urinary incontinence.

Stress UI is associated with activities increasing intra-abdominal pressure (e.g. coughing, sneezing, laughing).
Urge UI involves an involuntary loss of urine occurring while a person has a strong, sudden need to urinate.
Mixed UI involves symptoms of stress and urge urinary incontinence.

Emsella may be suitable for you if:

  • You are a man or woman experiencing any type of UI (even if you have had a prolapse)
  • You have been told that you need to do kegels in order to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles
  • A mum that needs care after delivery
  • A man or woman experiencing decreased intimate satisfaction
  • A man or woman that wants to exercise and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles as a preventative measure

Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) refers to persistent issues with sexual desire, reduced blood flow, arousal, sensitivity, orgasm, or pain during intercourse, leading to distress or relationship difficulties. FSD is often linked to a weak pelvic floor.

Causes of FSD:

  • Physical: Hormonal changes (menopause, pregnancy, birth control), chronic illnesses (diabetes, heart disease), medications (antidepressants, antihypertensives).
  • Psychological: Stress, anxiety, depression, past trauma, body image issues.
  • Relational/Social: Poor communication, unresolved conflicts, lack of intimacy.
Symptoms of FSD:
  • Low or absent sexual desire.
  • Difficulty becoming aroused or maintaining lubrication.
  • Inability to achieve orgasm or reduced orgasm intensity.
  • Pain during intercourse.

Benefits of Emsella pelvic floor stimulation:

  • Improves blood circulation in the pelvic region, enhancing arousal, lubrication, orgasm function and intensity.
  • Strengthens the pelvic floor muscles, improving vaginal tightness and response.
  • Helps with stress urinary incontinence, reducing anxiety related to bladder leaks during intimacy.
  • Increases neuromuscular control, leading to better sensation and overall sexual confidence.

Male Sexual Dysfunction (MSD) encompasses problems affecting sexual performance, such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, low libido and reduced orgasm intensity. Pelvic floor weakness in men can contribute to MSD.

Causes of MSD:

  • Physical: Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, hormonal imbalances (low testosterone), medications (antidepressants, blood pressure drugs).
  • Psychological: Stress, performance anxiety, depression, relationship issues.
  • Lifestyle: Excessive alcohol, smoking, drug use, lack of exercise.

Symptoms of MSD:
  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction).
  • Reduced sexual desire or libido.
  • Premature, delayed, or absent ejaculation.
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse.

Benefits of Emsella pelvic floor stimulation:

  • Enhances erectile function by improving pelvic muscle strength and blood flow.
  • Helps prevent premature ejaculation by increasing control over pelvic floor muscles.
  • Boosts stamina and sexual performance by strengthening the core muscles involved in arousal and ejaculation.
  • Assists in post-prostate surgery recovery, improving urinary control and sexual function.

This may vary depending on your age, physical condition, and many other aspects. Many clients begin to feel tangible results right after the treatment. Positive results typically continue to improve over the next few weeks with most clients experiencing improvements towards the end of their course of treatments.

In severe cases, it may take 2-3 months to see results because the muscles continue to strengthen even after the final treatment.

Patients say it is completely painless, the procedure feels like an intense pelvic floor workout. You can sit on Emsella and relax during the treatment.

Compared to other procedures, there is absolutely no preparation required or downtime with Emsella. You can get back to any daily activity immediately following the procedure.

Emsella is FDA cleared, medical CE-marked, and represents the first innovative technology that has shown in multiple studies to treat incontinence and intimate discomfort. When you come in for a consultation, we will cover how Emsella works and ensure that you are a suitable candidate for treatment.

This will vary according to your health condition. The clinical studies show that the majority of patients are able to maintain the results 6 months after their treatment series. However, we recommend booking another consultation a few months after your treatments to see if you may benefit from any additional treatments. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is the key to maintaining your results in the longer term.

Yes, we have already treated a number of clients in our clinic with positive results and feedback. There are also multiple scientific studies published that document in detail how BTL Emsella helps patients. Results of clinical trials include:

  • 95% patient satisfaction rate
  • 65% average improvement in urinary incontinence symptoms
  • 67% of patients reduced or eliminated hygienic pad usage
  • 76% better sexual satisfaction and desire
